Happy Halloween week! I hope you all have a safe, festive (and dry!) holiday and a beautiful weekend. In addition to Halloween festivities on Friday, there are some great Dia de los Muertos celebrations happening, a few sensory-friendly options, Home Depot’s first Saturday Workshops of the month, and – can you believe it – a Santa visit!
As always, these are just some of the extra special one-off events happening in the area. In addition to these, there are so many sweet library offerings, open play opportunities at local museums and businesses, fun and educational events at our local nature centers and more. You can find all of these in our local event calendar! I hope you have an amazing weekend – whatever you end up doing!

Halloween Festivities! – While many Halloween festivals took place last weekend, there is still plenty of fun happening on actual Halloween. If you’re looking for a sweet daytime option for your little, Playmates Detroit will be having a Halloween-themed Crawl & Play at Sundrops Playschool in Indian Village. Later in the day, Grosse Pointe’s The Village and North Corktown Neighborhood Association are hosting pre-trick or treating festivities for local residents (both events are open to public). Michigan Central will also be opening up to the community for Halloween at the Station from 5:00-9:00pm, and of course, Halloween in the D – a family-friendly celebration that includes local events happening at police precincts, recreation centers, and fire stations all over Detroit will be taking place Friday afternoon!
In-Store Kids Workshop: Excavator at Home Depot | November 1, 9:00am-12:00pm – It’s the first Saturday of the month, which means free in-store kids workshops at Home Depot. This weekend they’ll be having littles make excavators!
Family Workshop: Bricks of Hope at Ford House | November 1, 10:00am-12:00pm – Kids ages 5+ and their adults can head to Ford House on Saturday to learn about Architect Albert Kahn and then get hands on designing and painting their own dream houses (tickets run $5-$8).
Get Your Roll On! – Grab your carved pumpkins (and a cart or wagon) and head to Spindler Park in Eastpointe or the Clinton Township Sledding Hill for two fun pumpkin roll events this weekend on the Eastside! Both events are free and include donuts and cider (while they last).
Celebrate Dia de los Muertos on the Detroit Riverfront | November 1, 11:00am-2:00pm – Robert C. Valade Park will be home to a beautiful Dia de los Muertos celebration on Saturday that includes children’s storytelling, arts and crafts, a performance by Ballet Folklórico Moyocoyani Izel and live music.
Enjoy two great sensory-friendly activities at the DIA and OAC! – Detroit Institute of Arts’ Art Making Studio and the DNR Outdoor Adventure Center are both offering sensory-friendly hours and activities this weekend for guests with sensory processing differences. At the DIA, guests can make sugar skulls and learn about their role in Day of the Dead celebrations (registration is required!), and if your little one is interested in reptiles and amphibians, Nature Discovery will be at the Outdoor Adventure Center for some hands-on fun with these fun and fascinating creatures! (Note: once the sensory-friendly hours are over on Sunday, the interactive creature fun will continue from 12-3pm)
Christmas Open House at English Gardens (All Locations) | November 2, 10:00am-5:00pm – If you have been chomping at the bit to go full on Christmas once Halloween is over, this is your chance. Local English Gardens (Eastside locations are Clinton Township & Eastpointe), will be unveiling their holiday displays on Sunday, along with some festive activities, and even Santa visits!
