Juneteenth Celebration @ Mt Clemens Public Library

June 17, 2025 @ 6:00 pm7:00 pm

Celebrate Juneteenth with trivia and traditional foods that symbolize the resilience of Black Americans and the sacrifices they made during slavery.

The Emancipation Proclamation, which took effect in 1863, could not be enforced in areas still under Confederate control. As a result, enslaved people in Texas, the westernmost Confederate state, remained in bondage for more than two years. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when approximately 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, and announced that more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free by executive decree.
