Celebrate Summer in Metro-Detroit’s Backyard!

For many Metro-Detroit families, summertime means family fun on the lake — and at The War Memorial, that means SummerFest! Our annual summer fun series returns this year with family-friendly concerts on our lakefront lawn.

All SummerFest events are free and open to everyone from everywhere! Bring your lawn chair, blanket, or enjoy the festival from your boat. Concerts are rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, outdoor concerts will take place in the War Memorial Ballroom. While tickets are free, we do ask that you register with us at the link below.

Dave Bennett Band: Dave Bennett doesn’t fit the mold.

On July 10th our concert series opens with a War Memorial favorite, the Dave Bennett Band! With his special blend of rockabilly and jazz it’s sure to be a night to remember. Bennett is a multi-instrumentalist and singer who performs everything from jazz and swing to rock and roll.  As a jazz and pop clarinet player Bennett has performed all over North American at historic venues and festivals, including Carnegie Hall. His 2018 Mack Avenue Records release "Blood Moon" reached No. 24 on the Billboard jazz charts.

Bennett is a clarinet virtuoso who plays electric guitar, piano, drums, and vocalizes. Saluting swing to rock, he covers music from the Swing Era to early Rockabilly and Country, to Elvis Presley and more. You won’t want to miss this!

Free and open to all — registration is requested

Miss Paula & The Candy Bandits Sensory-Friendly Concert @ Sosnick Courtyard

  • 51 Parsons Street Detroit, MI, 48201 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Miss Paula and the Candy Bandits is a family-friendly rock band. Go on a mellow musical journey with Miss Paula and friends as they perform a special acoustic set of candy-coated rock music for kids and adults alike, featuring a guitar, vocalists, and percussion. Join in the fun with movement and call back singing!

Arrive early to enjoy pre-concert activities from 2:00–2:50 p.m., including lawn games and an instrument exploration station where you can touch, hold, and play various musical instruments.

What’s a sensory-friendly concert?

Relaxed and sensory-friendly events are designed for individuals on the autism spectrum and with other sensory sensitivities. Our culture can be unforgiving if you're unable to conform to standard concert etiquette. This can exclude individuals who are unable to sit still or who may express emotions such as joy or excitement through vocalization. This relaxed, sensory-friendly concert aims to remove barriers, allowing everyone to be themselves and enjoy a musical experience in a safe and judgement-free environment.

Your experience includes:

  • A relaxed, family-friendly concert environment that embraces neurodiversity.

  • An information guide and social narrative to help you prepare for the event.

  • A limited number of Sensory Toolkits containing fidget toys and noise-reducing headphones, available for use during the event.

  • An indoor quiet room to take a break.

  • Movement and dancing during the concert are welcome!

  • Flexible seating: Bring your own picnic blanket or lawn chairs and choose how close you’d like to be to the stage and speakers during the concert.

  • Limited audience size for reduced crowds.

  • Trained event staff: The Mid-Michigan Autism Association has provided training to our staff to help them better understand the characteristics of autism and how to better communicate and support autistic individuals.

Please contact Kiersten Alcorn, Manager of Community Engagement, at kalcorn@dso.org with any accessibility questions.

Concert of Colors @ Various Locations in Detroit

2024 Schedule — Concert of Colors

The Concert of Colors is metro Detroit’s free annual diversity-themed music festival. Global music at its finest at this colorful, festive, upbeat coveted summer event. Housed in Culture Source a coalition of 152 arts organizations in Southeast Michigan, the Concert of Colors has become the Midwest’s biggest diversity and arts festival.

It is produced by the Concert of Colors with partners Culture Source, The Detroit Institute of Arts, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American HistoryACCESS,  University of MichiganDetroit Center, Michigan Science CenterDetroit Historical Museum, College For Creative Studies, Hellenic Museum of Michigan, Third Man Records, Lowriders of Detroit, Science Gallery Detroit, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Midtown Inc., University of Michigan Dearborn, Arab American National Museum, WDET, The Scarab Club, International Institute of Metro Detroit and Marx Layne & Company.

The goal of the upbeat, week-long festival is to unite metro Detroit’s diverse communities and ethnic groups through music and dance from around the world – and creating dialogue where participants embrace freedom of expression.

Over its rich 33-year history, the festival has blossomed into a celebrated, beloved highlight of metro Detroit’s summer festival season- one of the few remaining large scale, free-admission music festivals in the area.

The Concert of Colors was established by Ismael Ahmed – the former head of the human services organization ACCESS – and New Detroit in 1993 as a one-day event at Chene Park on Detroit’s riverfront. The inaugural event drew a modest crowd to Chene Park, but by 1999, some 10,000 music lovers were coming out each year. The festival expanded to three days in 2001, when it was part of the official festivities for Detroit’s 300th birthday, drawing an audience of 100,000. In 2019, the concert expanded to nine days.

Back in 2005, the festival’s opening night performance was relocated to historic Orchestra Hall at the Max M. & Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center in Detroit, the home of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO). The DSO became a full partner in 2006 as the entire festival relocated to the Max M. & Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center, with two indoor stages and one outdoor stage. In 2007, the festival grew to encompass four days of free live music. A major new development took place in 2008 when Don Was, über producer and the President of Blue note records, joined the Concert of Colors working group to curate an produce The Don Was All Star Revue that has become the top yearly showcase of Motor City music in the country.

In 2010, the Detroit Institute of Arts joined this remarkable collaborative effort, and as of 2019 is serving as the MainStage for Concert of Colors. In 2011, the number of festival venues expanded to four, with the addition of the Scarab Club and a new presenting partner, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History which also has expanded its role.

In recent years, attendance at the Concert of Colors has been more than 30,000.

World music, including the indigenous music of the Motor City, is the major focus of the Concert of Colors, but not the only focus. The festival also offers ethnic food, merchandise vendors, movies, poetry, children’s activities and much more. In 2014, The Arab American National Museum restored the annual Forum on Community, Culture and Race that began in 2006. The Forum is a conference featuring presentations and discussion among artists, people connected to cultural institutions and community leaders to examine the role of arts and culture in overcoming racial and ethnic barriers.

DATE(S):

Friday, July 19, 2024

TIME(S):

7 p.m.

AGE RANGE:

All ages

ABOUT THE OUTDOOR SUMMER CONCERT SERIES:

Ford House’s summer concert series transforms the sprawling estate into a symphony of melodies under the open sky. Enjoy incredible talents while you lounge on the lawn with Lake St. Clair at your back.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Bright, colorful, vibrant… those are some of the first things that come to mind when you think of flamingos. But they are also steady, firm, and well-balanced, which is exactly the combo you get with the Killer Flamingos.

After nearly 30 years of performing, the Killer Flamingos have established themselves as one of the premiere bands in the Midwest. Their reputation for excellence and professionalism precedes them, whether the Flamingos are playing a corporate event for Allstate Insurance in Chicago, keeping the dance floor hopping at an upscale wedding in Detroit, or entertaining throngs of people at an annual festival like Arts, Beats and Eats.

They cover Top 40 across the decades, from the 80s to current hits, with some Motown and other familiar favorites sprinkled in. Their considerable versatility, combined with off-the-chart levels of crowd interaction, has kept the Flamingos at the top of fan-voted lists like Hour Detroit Magazine’s “Best Band” and WDIV’s Click On Detroit’s “Best Local Band” for numerous years since 2008. They recently received the Metro Times 2017 “Best Cover Band” distinction and Hour Detroit’s 2018 “Best of Detroit” mention. There aren’t a lot of jobs out there where one can get applauded every 3-4 minutes, but there aren’t a lot of bands out there who leave it all on the stage like the Killer Flamingos.”
