SUMMARY:African World Festival @ Hart Plaza
DESCRIPTION:The African World Festival (AWF®) returns to Hart Plaza for a powerful three-day celebration of culture\, history\, and community\, honoring the LEGACY of the African Diaspora. \nThis year’s festival holds special significance as we commemorate the 60th anniversary of the museum — six decades of preserving\, educating\, and celebrating Black history and culture. From July 18 to 20\, festivalgoers will experience an immersive journey through music\, dance\, art\, storytelling\, food\, and meaningful conversations that highlight our shared heritage’s strength\, resilience\, and beauty. \nThe festival starts with an exciting Opening Night featuring a dynamic fusion of live performances\, spoken word\, and cultural showcases that set the tone for the weekend. Throughout the festival\, attendees can enjoy world-class musical acts\, engaging panel discussions\, and an African Marketplace filled with handcrafted goods from Black artisans and entrepreneurs. Families can explore the Children’s Village\, where hands-on activities and storytelling sessions will inspire a deep connection to history and identity. \nThe Food Pavilion will offer a delicious selection of African\, Caribbean\, and soul food\, celebrating the flavors that connect us to our ancestral roots. This year’s festival is not just a gathering — it is a testament to the enduring impact of Black culture and a call to build upon our collective legacy for future generations. As we honor the vision of Dr. Charles H. Wright\, we invite the community to join us in celebrating 60 years of history\, culture\, and progress at the Wright Museum and beyond. \nImage Source

SUMMARY:Reading & Rhythm on the Riverfront @ Gabriel Richard Park
DESCRIPTION:Reading & Rhythm on the Riverfront (R3) is the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy’s unique\, interactive early literacy program. \nWith the generous support of General Motors\, R3 stretches six weeks throughout the summer and features readings by local celebrities\, as well as business and community leaders.  The program also boasts live and interactive family entertainment and free books sponsored by Priority Health in partnership with the Detroit Public Library’s “Library on Wheels.” \nLike last year\, the program will take place at Gabriel Richard Park — a large riverfront oasis located off of Jefferson Avenue at the foot of the Belle Isle Bridge. \nThis summer we are excited to welcome back We Shall Read as a partner at Reading and Rhythm on the Riverfront. We Shall Read is a local non-profit on a mission to equip caregivers with simple and engaging tools to help improve their child’s reading. Be sure to check out their free and fun resources at their table at Reading and Rhythm on the Riverfront this summer. \nThe 2025 program will run July 10 – August 15 with sessions taking place on Thursdays and Fridays at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Each session lasts approx. 45 minutes. Participants must participate in the session to receive a free book. Pre-registration is required. \nRegistration is now open for individuals and summer camps & groups of ten or more children.
